John here.
This week, I traveled to Washington D.C. to meet with other self-advocates and then to go up to Capitol Hill to meet with members of Congress and their staff. I had fun, but it is important too.
I participated in the Self-Advocacy Conference held by the National Down Syndrome Society. I met with other self-advocates and the leadership of NDSS. I am on the Board of NDSS. We learned about important issues and how to be leaders in our communities. We also had a dance. You know I love dancing.
On Wednesday, my Mom, Dad, and I went to Capitol Hill and spent the day meeting with Members of Congress and their staff. We spoke about the rights of people with differing abilities. We spoke about how my colleagues deserve to hold onto more of the money they earn.
Everyone we met knew about John’s Crazy Socks and that made it easier to talk to them. You see, when you buy our socks, you make it possible for me to speak up for people with differing abilities.
I am looking forward to this weekend because we have a big track meet with the Special Olympics. I will run the 100 meter dash, throw the javelin and run in a relay race. I have been training hard. My brother Jamie coaches our team and he has been helping me.
Mother’s Day is next week and there is still time to order socks for your mother. I give socks to my mother every year and she loves them.
Have a good weekend.
