| This week: We're going skiing. | | | My mother woke up to snow at her house this morning – the first of the season in the Colorado High Country. It's time to dust off our down coats, check that the mittens all have a match and, most importantly, book our annual ski trip. TBH, this isn’t hard for us. My mom lives in the Colorado ski town where I grew up. We buy plane tickets and four-pack lift tickets to Arapahoe Basin because it's our favorite. Then, we book a rental reservation for the kids' equipment at the same place every year. But annually, we get there and say, should we go to Japan next year? How fun would it be to take our ski trip in Europe? But we never do. Because it’s so much easier to do what you know. And also, my mom's house is my sanctuary. But, this is the year I’m going to challenge my family, and you too, to get out of our comfort zone and choose someplace new. Because I want to see the views from the top of Zermatt. And I want to know if the snow at Niseko makes the same swishing sound. Besides, I can’t think of a better après meal than ramen. Kick off the planning with the LP list of the world's best ski resorts. | Editor Raised in Silverthorne, Colorado, I live in Nashville with my partner, two kids, a dog named Wyatt and a cat named Friday. I love far-flung adventures and my favorite place is always the last place I went. Awe is my preferred state of being. | | | | | Check out these wintry wonderlands | There is not a single thing on Kerry Walker’s list of wintry experiences that I don’t want to do. For example, going on a velogemel in the Bernese Oberland Alps. I may not be able to say it or ride it, but I certainly want to try. | | | | | Winter hikes are the best hikes | There is nothing I like more than a winter hike, especially under a full moon. Amelia Mularz has rounded up six ways I can indulge my favorite activity in the US. | | | | | Fancy skiing in the Arctic Circle? | Yes, I do. Sign me up to check out any of these off-the-beaten-track resorts. I’d love to test out my American skills on the European slopes. | | | | | Apparently, the skiing (and après) in Bansko, Bulgaria, is something to check out. I’m always looking for off-the-radar destinations to add to my list. | | | | Just up the street (as the crow flies) from buzzy Amsterdam, Utrecht is one of the oldest cities in the Netherlands, offering a medieval core to wander through and a loop of pretty canals to explore. Our own Sasha Brady ventured there recently and decided we should all make the move.
