Tomorrow is the first official day of fall in the northern hemisphere, and I could not be more ecstatic. Suddenly, stepping outside feels like biting into a crisp apple. Foliage will soon turn hues of amber, crimson and carmine. If youโve already watched a Nora Ephron movie or restarted Gilmore Girls, I wonโt hold it against you because so have I.
Fall is also my favorite season to travel because there are generally fewer crowds wherever you go. My kind of fall trip? Thereโs probably a town square or a Main Street. Small businesses abound, and everyone says hello to you, even if you are a stranger. Itโs usually not far from rural stretches of farmland, forests, mountains and rivers. Donโt discount these small towns as sleepy โ theyโre cozy and friendly.
You can take the mouse out of the country, but this city mouse will find every chance she gets to go off the grid. Join me on my autumnal small-town saunter!
