And so.
The "planning end-of-year trips in October because everyone seems to book super early these days" phase has begun.
Before we get to the Japanese spoons, kaleidoscopic catalogues, and wild insurance scams(!) may we remind you: we have bags for those trips.

We recommend: Lake Hawea, New Zealand
Itβs hard to beat the atmosphere of this mountain-rimmed lake, especially as glimpsed from the stony shores of Lake Hawea Holiday Park while the waves lap at your feet. A taste of what now-bustling Queenstown used to be like.

- These do indeed appear to be excellent chef spoons (via Myles)
- One of the biggest losses when we leave physical mail behind will be the stamp art
- Aways been skeptical of dashcams, but this caught-on-dashcam-scam is a pretty wild vote in favour of them

Did you know: sometimes, buying a flight from A to C, via B is cheaper than buying a flight that's simply A to B? Just get off in City B and miss the connecting flight.
Skiplagged knew that, and helped you find those flights, and is now paying 10 million dollars to American Airlines for "copyright infringement", which seems like... not what was really the issue here? But whatever.
View From The Wing has a good breakdown about what happens next β and the risks you face using this tactic.

Do you know how to look at art? If not, Vox will help you.
The title's misleading β of course there's no one way to appreciate art β but the content successfully speaks to a wider challenge: priming your brain to better understand the world.
Physical products are a great example: since starting Minaal as a very-much-not-designer, I'm now able to evaluate potential purchases on a deeper β or more deliberate β level of usage than before.
Some good questions to ask yourself before looking at art (or buying a product):
- Does the intent of the maker match my intent as consumer/user? Does that impact how I feel about it?
- In 5 years, how will interacting with this have impacted my life?
- Am I engaging with this thing because of a specific need, or a general frame of mind (excitement, sadness, boredom etc)?

Taking furious notes on this ridiculously deep dive on Hammacher Schlemmer: a very strange company selling very strange products in a very strange way.
They've thrived for 137 years promoting products they already know won't sell, selling mostly via print catalogue, removing well-known brands from products. No-one does it quite like HS.
Sometimes, being a successful company is just leaning into your weird.
