Hi,
We wanted to share what we've learned from working with Dylan Johnson, one of our High-Performance Team athletes.
Dylan has over 193,000 YouTube subscribers and approaches every race like a science experiment. He’s currently logging 471-mile training weeks and recently placed top 10 at Unbound—so we asked him to break down how he thinks about nutrition.
For Dylan, fueling isn’t optional—it’s a cornerstone of performance. When you're training for long events, getting your nutrition right can be the difference between finishing strong and falling apart.
He brings the same data-driven mindset to fueling as he does to his training. What’s refreshing is how practical and easy to implement his strategy is.
Take Flow Formulas Endurance Drink Mix, for example. It’s designed specifically for long efforts: three scoops in your bottle delivers 90 grams of clean, easy-to-digest carbs. Dylan points out that the light flavor is a key advantage—it helps him avoid the dreaded flavor fatigue that can derail a race.
His fueling philosophy? “Test everything.”
That means experimenting in training to find the exact combination of products that work best for your body.
At Unbound, Dylan’s data showed he sustained 90–110 grams of carbs per hour—with no bonking or gut issues. His approach is both strategic and flexible: he builds around Flow Formulas as the core, then supplements with specific gels depending on what his body needs at different stages of the race.

Here’s a look inside how Dylan builds his fueling strategy:
Flow Formulas Endurance Drink Mix – We like to think of this as Dylan’s “carb anchor,” delivering 90 grams of clean, easy-to-digest carbs from just three scoops. It gives him a reliable baseline, making it easy to track intake and adjust with gels or bars based on the demands of the day. The mild flavor is a significant advantage—it helps prevent flavor fatigue, so he can continue sipping throughout long efforts without getting tired of the taste.
Dylan will then get additional carbs from both Maurten’s Gel 160, SantaMadre Unusual Gel, and Styrkr Gel30 Nitro+Nitrate. The natural nitrates from the beetroot extract in the Styrkr Gel help increase blood flow to help increase his power output. We loved learning that Dylan is also a big fan of UnTapped Maple Waffles - which offer a nice “break” from gels and helps him fuel with delicious real maple syrup.
After a hard training session, Dylan goes for the Styrkr Bar+ to kickstart his recovery with a combination of 15 g of protein and 45 g of carbs.
