Our lower periods in life often have an unlikely-sounding source — hope. We are often hopeful that things will turn out well, but then, when life collapses on us, we fall prey to panic, despair and anger.
After a rendition on why we should just give up and stop showering, we can move on to thoughts that restore perspective and situate our woes in a larger context of time and space.
Even in a world of suffering, there is room for soft cheese, a walk with a friend, early summer mornings and a list of reasons why we should not, after all, end matters right now:
"A difficult life can still be a good life."
"People are seldom nasty, they are almost always projecting immense anxiety and insecurity."
"Most of us say ‘I’m fine, thank you’ and cry in the bathroom the same evening."
"A fresh fig can – at times – turn our day around."
