We’ve been reluctant to admit that operating in a high-pressured modern economy might not be so compatible with other life commitments. In 1900, academia was almost entirely a career for the unmarried. The view was that certain kinds of jobs require such effort and devotion that one really shouldn’t try to combine them with other duties. One should live in a commune of sorts, single and socialise mainly with people in the same kinds of work.
This stands as a reminder that we’re asking ourselves to do a lot of complicated things at once. No wonder we squabble, feel resentment and experience the occasional burst of despair – to adapt to the modern workplace, we require a whole new set of strategies never considered before. | | | One of the immediate ways we can better balance the pressures of life is by addressing work-related anxiety. By making small tweaks to improve the balance of our spheres of emotional, social, physical and existential health in the office, we can make tangible progress in being more well in life as a whole.
