To our village ~
As a female owned business, we honor March through Women’s History Month. We set the clocks ahead to capture more sunshine in our days, and the green grass starts to thaw to remind us that the cold of winter is temporary and spring in all its abundant glory is on her way. March is also Women’s History Month, another reason why we’re reflecting on the power of women to shape what comes next.
This year,
we’re focusing on the women at the front lines of our climate crisis, the women bravely and consciously tending to our land and shaping what comes next through our soil. Take, for instance,
Catherine Welch of
Windrose Farm in Paso Robles. She’s dedicated to organic, regenerative agriculture that nurtures both the land and her local community. In New York, Leah Penniman trains people of color in regenerative farming, supplying organic produce to food deserts as the co-founder of
Soul Fire Farm.
All month long,
we will celebrate the female farmers who’ve dedicated their lives to the most important aspect of culture: agriculture - who inspire us with their action day in and day out and unwavering commitment to building a more just and resilient food system. Their leadership reminds us that caring for the planet and caring for each other are one and the same.
From our kitchens to our sourcing partners, we believe in backing women whose work nourishes communities and regenerates the land. Supporting their leadership isn’t just something we spotlight in March — it’s woven into how we build, source, grow, and give back to our Earth everyday at west~bourne. It’s our entire reason for being. And, women are truly changing the world.
A few notes from my kitchen this month ~
In California, the berries are beginning! A simple bowl with a touch of extra virgin avocado oil and flaky salt is hard to beat.
Leeks, always — slow-braised until jammy or tinned (Row 7 Seed’s new tinned veg line with sweet garleeks are sublime).
On that note, alliums are a necessity these days, particularly in a fan-favorite format:
French Onion Soup.
With gratitude,
