In the early days of Best Made, we had a run on our Japanese Higo knives, and needed more, much more. When we asked our Japanese bladesmith to increase production, his response was a firm "No." His reason? "That would only diminish my quality."
This experience underscores a crucial lesson from my decade running Best Made: creating quality products is challenging, and mass-producing them without compromising standards is nearly impossible.
Our new site reflects this philosophy with two product categories:
- Short Supply: Pre-releases and limited editions available for a brief time.
- Long Supply: Our permanent collection of tried-and-true products.
While notebooks or socks can be mass-produced, hand-forged axes cannot. Our Short Supply approach allows us to:
- Minimize waste
- Eliminate excess inventory
- Maintain the highest quality standards
Remember, Short Supply items may sell out quickly. You'll always be informed about our latest offerings as a newsletter subscriber. Like our prescient Higo knife maker — this strategy preserves the craftsmanship that defines Best Made.
All my best,
Peter Buchanan-Smith Founder
