Wool is the original performance fiber: it has an uncanny ability to keep you warm, to regulate temperature in both cold and hot weather, to resist the elements, and to just endure. There are few materials, man-made or not, that can compete.
The Cap of Courage remains standard issue at Best Made, and—for the first time—it's made in the United States. Using a fine lambswool yarn (finer than Merino wool), we partnered with a small knitting mill in Texas for this next evolution.
The wool comes from Shetland sheep, native to Scotland's northern islands for over a thousand years. This is what we call 'working wool'—wool intentionally bred for resilience, warmth, and longevity over luxury-level softness. The fiber's structure resists pilling, so the sweater maintains its surface.
This genuine black wool comes from rare black Shetland sheep whose fleece produces a permanent, deep color impossible to achieve through dyeing. Undyed, the wool preserves its natural softness and develops rich tonal variations through gradual, even fading over time.
Partnering closely with our friends at Dehen, we refined the fit and upgraded durability with added interior reinforcement and welt pockets of this Best Made stalwart. We're proud to bring back the classic charcoal (with hidden Famous Red pockets), and introduce a striking new moss green.
Neither too thick nor too thin, they regulate temperature in all conditions, wick moisture efficiently, and maintain their structure through countless wears and washes. Our extensive wear tests proved they deliver: 16 hours in Gore-Tex lined logger boots in the middle of August will do it.
