Can you guess which singer wore this corset?
The answer is . . . Jennifer Lopez! J.Lo sported this ensemble designed by The Blonds in her music video for Ni Tú Ni Yo (Neither You Nor I). Drawing inspiration from historical chain mail, the “Ghangstah” corsets made their runway debut in The Blonds’ Spring/Summer 2015 collection.
For the June 2023 cover of Rolling Stone, actor and singer Janelle Monáe wore The Blonds’ gold-and-crystal Super Freak Chain headpiece.
The design was inspired by Cleopatra’s gold wigs, which symbolized the queen’s regal aesthetics and power. It also drew from singer Rick James’s funky yet elegant hairstyle around the time that his chart-topping song “Super Freak” was released. With this headpiece, Monáe celebrated both ancient and modern icons while making a powerful fashion statement.
The Blonds’ Spring/Summer 2023 Chain collection drew inspiration not only from a 3,000-year-old coffin in our collection (currently being restored), but also from 1980s television star Mr. T! Watch our highlights tour of Solid Gold to discover the full story.
