Brooklyn Reads: Marsha with Tourmaline and Phoebe Robinson
Thursday, May 22, 7–10 pm
Celebrate the legacy of Black transgender activist Marsha P. Johnson with author and artist Tourmaline, whose debut book is the first definitive biography of Johnson as both an activist and artist.
The evening opens with a performance by Egyptt LaBeija, Overall Godmother of the House of LaBeija. After a reading, Tourmaline is joined in conversation by Phoebe Robinson, an actor, producer, bestselling author, and founder of Tiny Reparations Books.
Film: Paint Me a Road out of Here
Saturday, May 31, 2–4 pm
Catch a matinee screening of the new documentary Paint Me a Road out of Here, centered on Faith Ringgold’s artwork For the Women’s House. Currently on view at the Brooklyn Museum, this monumental painting was created in 1971 for women incarcerated on Rikers Island.
The screening is followed by a talkback with artist Mary Enoch Elizabeth Baxter and filmmaker Cat Gund, moderated by curator Catherine Morris. 🎞️

Juneteenth Jubilee
Saturday, June 21, 1–5 pm
Celebrate Juneteenth with an afternoon of activities and music celebrating self-expression, community, and Black liberation and creativity.
Vibe to jazz and a DJ set, listen in or contribute your own voice to a poetry open mic, play games, make a zine or mini-scrapbook, and participate in our fifth annual community photo series. Sip, shop, and be nourished by some of Brooklyn’s favorite Black-owned restaurants.

Toward Joy: New Frameworks for American Art

Join us at the Brooklyn Public Library to celebrate the publication of the exhibition catalogue for Toward Joy: New Frameworks for American Art. Curators Stephanie Sparling Williams (Andrew W. Mellon Curator of American Art) and Caroline Gillaspie (Assistant Curator of American Art) go behind the scenes on the themes, debates, and curatorial process that shaped the exhibition.
