So, I’m going to be real with y’all. We get so many emails from customers about how much they love the quality and flavor of our spices, and our bright lil’ tins. We also get a fair amount of emails telling us those same tins are actually pretty inconvenient to use. The fact that the packaging we’ve worked hard on over the years (scroll to see that journey!) isn’t really cutting it has been a hard pill to swallow. But we’re always listening, and truly always growing! So I’d like to tell you what we’re doing about it and why.
As beautiful as the design of our tins is, they can be particularly pesky in some regards. Here’s what you’ve told us:
- The lids are hard to open and the spice often falls out (we face the same problem, as you can see above^)
- The foil seal is hard to tear off + prone to damage during shipping, which causes spillage
- Despite our best efforts, the tins aren’t 100% airtight, which means spices get clumpy :(
On a more nerdy operational side, rectangular tins don’t allow for automatic labelling. That means our co-packers spend a lot of time applying labels by hand. That’s an expensive bottleneck for us, not just in terms of $$, but also time—figuring this out can be the difference between us packing a thousand tins a day and packing thousands of tins a day!
SO we’re working on packaging 4.0—a solid new plan that can solve all these issues as we also rapidly scale! Our goals? Easy-to-open tins that are stackable and reusable, but a lot quicker to co-pack. A solution that ensures your spices are 100% airtight when they reach you to preserve their freshness and flavor, and then as airtight as possible when the tin is open and in use.
TLDR: We hear you and we’re sincerely working on it!!
Transitions like this take time and a lot of hands across continents to figure out every variable. We *need* to make sure we’re getting this right for the long haul. So here’s the ask: please be patient with us just a little while longer, we’ll have a solid solve and new packaging rolling out by early next year at the latest.
We rely on your solid support so keep this ship moving and we are so grateful to be in your kitchens and part of your cooking. Thank you for always holding us accountable and caring deeply enough to tell us what you love and don’t - it’s what the “with love and in community” that I sign off every email with truly means!
