- Yelp Sues Google for Antitrust Violations [theverge.com]
Less than a month after a federal judge ruled Google an illegal monopolist, Yelp has filed its own antitrust lawsuit. "Yelp alleges that Google has 'created or preserved its monopoly in local search services by preferencing its own inferior [local search] vertical over competitors’, which Yelp says harmed competition and reduced the quality of local search services. Yelp claims that the way Google directs users away from search results and toward its own local search product "should be considered illegal tying of separate products to keep rivals from reaching scale." Lauren Feiner reports.
- Pitch Deck Gives New Details on Company’s Plan to Listen to Your Devices for Ad Targeting [gizmodo.com]
Yikes. "Media conglomerate Cox Media Group has been pitching tech companies on a new targeted advertising tool that uses audio recordings culled from smart home devices." According to a pitch deck obtained by 404 Media, Cox claims that its “Active Listening” tool "works by using smart devices, which can 'capture real-time intent data by listening to our conversations.' After the data is captured, advertisers can 'pair this voice-data with behavioral data to target in-market consumers,'" the deck says. You can see the deck here.
- Uber Fined $324m Over EU Drivers' Data Transfer Breach [techcrunch.com]
"Ride-hailing platform Uber has been fined by the Netherlands’ privacy watchdog for breaching the European Union’s General Data Protection Regulation (GDPR)"...and "it’s among the largest penalties levied on a tech company since the GDPR began operating back in 2018." The complaint is related to transfers of drivers' personal data — "including account details, taxi licenses, location data, photos, payment details, identity documents and. in some cases. even criminal and medical data" — from the European Union to the U.S.
