- The Slow-Burn Nightmare of the National Public Data Breach [wired.com]
"Data breaches are a seemingly endless scourge with no simple answer, but the breach in recent months of the background-check service National Public Data illustrates just how dangerous and intractable they have become," warns Lily Hay Newman. - Default App Settings Can Pose a Risk to User Privacy [fastcompany.com]
Sure, sticking with an app's default settings is tempting, but at what cost? To protect your privacy, be sure to limit app access and always read the privacy policies of the apps you use.
(For even more protection, Android users can download DuckDuckGo for Android and enable App Tracking Protection. This free feature helps block 3rd-party trackers in your apps, even when you're not using them.)
- Texas Sues GM, Saying It Tricked Customers Into Sharing Driving Data Sold to Insurers [techcrunch.com]
In a recently filed lawsuit, Texas alleged that GM has been abusing costumers' data and trust for years. "New car owners were presented with a 'confusing and highly misleading' process that was implied to be for their safety, but 'was no more than a deceptively designed sales flow' that surrendered their data for GM to sell."
