Considering I’ve recommended no fewer than five puzzle companies in this newsletter over the years, I’m sure it’ll come as no surprise that I clicked on this article as soon as I saw it. Since 1978, 94-year-old Jerry Slocum has been hosting the International Puzzle Party, first out of his living room, and now in hotels and museums around the world. It’s an invite-only experience, so attendees are restricted to “serious puzzle collectors for the exchange and sale of mechanical puzzles, books and related items, as well as for fun and fellowship.” This year’s event will be in Japan, though details beyond that are a tightly kept secret. I aspire to one day get an invite—and to be able to afford the rare puzzles that I just learned about.

You’ve probably seen enough positive press around semi-controversial restaurateur and Instagram savant Keith McNally’s memoir that you don’t need me to sell you on reading it. Instead, I’m here to tell you to listen to it. The audiobook is narrated by Saltburn star Richard E. Grant, whose mellifluous voice is perfectly suited to McNally’s candid and surprisingly affective musings. I genuinely looked forward to listening to it every night, though I made sure to use the timer functionality on Audible (and/or Spotify) to ensure I didn’t miss too much when I inevitably fell asleep.

It feels like pickles are always having a moment, so now is as good a time as any to recommend Go Easy’s newest Pickle Puffer pipe. Is it the classiest smoke? Definitely not. But since when does weed require a dress code? (On a related note, I enjoyed this recent little interview with the Digital Marketing Manager behind the ever-popular Grillo’s Pickles.)

There are amazing people out there who selflessly volunteer in all sorts of ways and with all kinds of organizations, expecting nothing in return for their good deeds. That’s great for them, but if you’re the type of person who needs a tiny bit more for your hard work, well, here’s an opportunity for you. Open House New York is registering volunteers now through September 15th for their annual OHNY Weekend in October. The deal is simple: spend four hours of your time working at one of the 300 or so locations, like Castle Williams on Governors Island or the Highbridge Water Tower in Washington Heights, and get expedited access to busy destinations throughout the city (and some swag). You can even arrange it so you do your time with friends and family. Sign up here.

Regardless of your personal tolerance or preferences, Rose Los Angeles’ Strawberry Delights are a must-pack for any group trip. While I lean towards 5mg sativa-style edibles, these 1mg “Singles” are always the first to go in a crowd. I don’t know if it’s because they allow first-timers to dial in their dose or because they’re a nice low-to-no commitment option for even the most experienced consumer, but I now make sure to bring at least two boxes for any given weekend. If you’ve got Labor Day plans with friends or family, stock up now.

The Kings Theatre in Brooklyn is hosting a 35th anniversary screening of Home Alone, followed by an interview and audience Q&A with Macaulay Culkin on Monday, December 8th. While I hate the fact that we’re talking about December when it’s still August, I can’t think of a better way to kick off the holiday season. So festive! Tickets went on sale earlier this week but you can find resale options on StubHub. (If you’re looking for a more immediate hit of ‘90s nostalgia, check out Nitehawk’s “Class of ‘95” programming, which includes Clueless, Casino, and The Baby-Sitters Club.)
