Something super for everyone, whether you’re a Gunn nut, a Krypto bro, or part of the, uh, Corenswet-Lodge. Man, we gotta workshop those names. —Alex Pappademas, culture editor |

It’s Friday, and while we’ve got a lot going on right now—between making delighted Sour Patch faces at every other pungent bar on the new Clipse album, pondering the audaciously period-accurate Quiet Storm textures on this Bieber project, and retroactively cancelling Ingmar Bergman, the day is just packed—there’s some important business we need to take care of before the weekend.
As you may have heard, there’s a new Superman movie in theaters now, in which David Corenswet steps into the Man of Steel’s red boots. Last week, in our GQ Hype cover story on Corenswet, GQ’s Frazier Tharpe called this project “one of Hollywood’s biggest gambles in recent memory,” which might even be putting it mildly—Corenswet’s inaugural flight as Superman is also designed to serve as a big-screen introduction to director and DC Studios co-CEO James Gunn’s rebooted DC Universe, the way Iron Man opened the doors to the interconnected and hyper-profitable MCU way back when. Accordingly, the new Superman is jam-packed with supporting-cast superheroes we’re likely to see again (like Mister Terrific, played by Edi Gathegi, subject of this week’s Real Life Diet interview)—and as William Goodman points out, the movie also contains more than a few hints as to what Gunn and his collaborators have up their sleeves for the DCU, from the obvious (Milly Alcock’s cameo as a certain super-person with a movie dropping next year) to the deep-cut-ish (Justice Society nerds, get ready to elbow each other.)
But this is GQ, so let’s address what’s really important: Who looks better in jeans and a tank top—Superman, or his nemesis Lex Luthor, aka documented press-tour swag-baron Nicholas Hoult? And how did Corenswet get those muscles of steel?
In other news: Lena Dunham’s new show Too Much reminds us that the generational voice of female messiness also writes really good male characters; we are once again asking you to stop taking pictures in the movie theater; Himanshu Suri, Mac DeMarco and others remember departed New York nightlife legend Billy Jones; men who love Love Island, speak your truth; Justin Bieber’s SWAG features some elite-tier features; Tom Holland talks Tottenham Hotspur football and Chris Nolan’s Odyssey; Drake is the Iceman now, apparently; zad template Pedro Pascal has parted ways with stylist Julie Ragolia; Mua’dib may or may not be bald in Dune 3; and, we’ve ranked the Cure’s albums and James Cameron’s movies. Up, up and away. —AP
