For the first time in my life, I’m on track to board over 20 flights before the end of the year. That may seem modest – or at least normal – to some of you, but it adds up to a lot of mileage. I can’t help but reflect on how much my environmental footprint has swelled in 2024, and what I can do about it.
Thankfully, we have a lot of ideas about this question here at Lonely Planet. Take more trains instead of planes. Shop for local produce (it tastes better, too). Learn why you shouldn’t stack rocks on your hikes and what it actually means to “Leave No Trace.” Spread the love and go somewhere off the tourist trail. And book experiences that give back to the planet.
The small choices we make when we plan our trips are more powerful than we think. And ultimately, they lead to a richer travel experience.
