This good-for-all skin types emollient—an ingredient that conditions the skin—moisturizes and prevents moisture loss, soothes irritation and inflammation, restores skin’s suppleness and flexibility, helps balance oil production, and can potentially provide antioxidant protection. All this, while also feeling silky smooth and luxurious when topically applied, not leaving behind a greasy, heavy after-feel.

While commonly referred to as one, squalane is technically not an oil since it doesn’t contain any fatty acids or glycerol, which are the main components of traditional oils, thus being great for acne-prone skin. |

You may have seen different versions of the ingredient floating around. Spelling wise it’s just 1 letter, otherwise:

Squalene with an e is the natural form. It’s one of the lipids that makes up human sebum (about 10-12% of it)—the protective oil that our body produces to moisturize our skin and make sure our skin barrier is functioning optimally—keeping moisture in and microscopic enemies out.
Other natural sources of squalene are olives, rice bran, sugarcane, and *cue the Jaws music*... shark liver. Rest assured, this is mostly a thing of the past! While shark-derived squalene is not explicitly banned worldwide, it has largely fallen out of favor due to the environmental and ethical concerns it raises. Long live the sharks.

Just like other natural processes in our bodies—i.e. skin cell turnover and collagen production—squalene production also diminishes as we age (especially after we hit 30), leading to overall dryer skin.

Although squalane is completely safe to use in topical skincare at levels of up to 100%, we prefer formulas that contain additional beneficial ingredients—such as humectants (like glycerin, to bind and pull in water) and other emollients (like jojoba oil)—to ensure a well-balanced routine.
Both of the body moisturizers in the Soft Services range, Speed Soak and Carea Cream, contain squalane since it is such a superb emollient with a less likely chance to be pore-clogging for acne-prone skin.
