In 2021, faced with rising fertilizer prices, our partners at Abades approached us with a proposal for a community fertilizer fund. We jumped at the opportunity, and in collaboration with our export partner Caravela, we provided seed money to help fund grant credit to members of Abades for purchasing fertilizer. The fund allows producers to nourish their crops adequately at pivotal moments throughout the year, helping ensure quality.
Today, the association represents 240 smallholder producers organized into nine geographic subgroups. And in recent years, they've invested in the organization through ongoing training in quality control, the construction of a new cooperative headquarters, and the creation of a rotating fertilizer fund for members.
