Whether you call HPT athlete Courtney Dauwalter the queen or GOAT of ultrarunning, it’s hard not to be a fan of one of the most dominant athletes in endurance sports.
Courtney, 40, has won ultradistance races by hours, and back-to-back, with her trademark relaxed attitude and smile.
In 2023, she became the first person, male or female, to win the Triple Crown of the three most iconic 100-mile races, in the same season: the Western States 100, Hardrock 100 and Ultra-Trail du Mont Blanc (UTMB).

Personality Conflict
Endurance sports tend to attract A-type personalities, which makes total sense. To compete in such grueling events, being rigid, meticulous, detail-oriented and even obsessed paves the way to success.
But Courtney is anything but.
Courtney doesn’t have a coach. Her training is based on how she feels, not a training schedule. She doesn’t even have a Strava account.
She runs in long shorts and baggy tops, just because they are more comfortable. Courtney munches on candy during training, and, at times, swills beer afterwards.
She does these things simply because they make her happy.
Keeping the Tank Full and Courtney Happy
Although Courtney’s relaxed nutrition strategy of “keeping the gas tank full with things that make me happy and are delicious,” has famously powered her incredible feats, it hasn’t been without a few bumps.
