- Traveling This Summer? Maybe Don't Let the Airport Scan Your Face. [vox.com]
Did you know you can opt out of facial scanning at the airport? If not, you're not alone — neither did tech reporter Sigal Samuel. In theory, opting out should be simple: just "stand away from the camera or keep your face covered with a mask, present your ID [to the officer], and say, 'I opt out of biometrics. I want the standard verification process.'" It's not always so seamless in practice, but it can still be worthwhile, even if you've had your face scanned before.
Opting out can help mitigate known risks of facial recognition, "from the possibility that your face data will be stolen due to breaches to the chance that you’ll be misidentified as a criminal suspect — and jailed." It can also help combat the normalization of surveillance.
- Kids Online Safety Bills to Get Senate Vote [thehill.com]
"Senate Majority Leader Chuck Schumer (D-N.Y.) will bring two bipartisan bills aimed at boosting online safety and privacy for kids to a vote this week after mounting pressure from advocates." The Kids Online Safety Act (KOSA) would "put in place regulations for how social media companies operate for minors online," while the Children’s Online Privacy Protection Act (COPPA) 2.0 "would update privacy standards tech companies need to follow for minors on their platforms. It would also ban targeted advertising to kids online."
