Your gut and brain are inextricably linked. Both literally (more on that later), but also in how we think about them.
Gut feelings, worried sick, butterflies in the stomach, a nervous trip to the loo—you can tell we understand that there’s a connection by the language we use. So let’s break this down. How does that connection work? And should you listen to it?
The enteric nervous system
The ENS is the system of neurons that covers the whole digestive tract—500 million cells that communicate with the brain via the vagus nerve. It can function independently of the brain, but the two are always talking to each other.
Serotonin production
The ENS produces neurotransmitters, including serotonin, which affects mood and sleep. 90% of serotonin is made in the gut, not the brain. This is why food can affect our mood.
The gut microbiome
This is the environment of bacteria living in your gut—tens, if nothing hundreds or trillions of microbes. Changes in the gut microbiome are linked to mental health and the immune system, and every decision you make, from what you eat to how much sleep you get, affects the bacteria.
The gut-brain connection
Studies have shown that our thoughts, emotions, and stresses affect the microbiome (gut bacteria) and digestive processes. And this goes both ways. How we treat our gut can also affect our brains.
So what can you do for your gut
