Gmail first introduced their tabbed inbox way back in 2013—more than a decade ago. But marketers still fear the Promotions tab, considering it the equivalent of the spam folder if their emails are delivered there.
Buckle up. Gmail’s not the only tabbed inbox in town. Yahoo Mail and Outlook have their own versions of tabs—and Apple Mail will be introducing categories with iOS 18.
So this is your friendly reminder: the Promotions tab is not the spam folder. Instead of wasting time on tactics to fool algorithms into delivering your emails into the Primary tab, marketers need to embrace the tabbed inbox and spend their time crafting memorable emails that will stand out, whichever tab they’re delivered to.
