I first watched the 2013-movie The Secret Life of Walter Mitty in a high school photography class and swore right then and there that one day, I would have a similar journey to Walter’s, romping through the Icelandic countryside. I still haven’t made it to Iceland, but I know I will someday because it’s remained my top dream trip ever since.
Our favorite movies and shows are always inspiring us to travel. In fact, there’s an official term for it: set-jetting. How fun is that?
Watch any Jane Austen film – Pride and Prejudice (2005) usually does the trick – and you’ll be fantasizing about roaming the English countryside like Elizabeth Bennet. Lord of the Rings fans make pilgrimages to New Zealand to experience the series’ otherworldly landscapes. I rewatch You’ve Got Mail (1998) every fall and remind myself why it’s the best time to be in New York.
That’s the beauty of movies and TV; they transport us to completely different worlds, real and not real. We’ll show you where to find the real off-screen.
