Hi,
Usually, I spotlight our High Performance Team athletes on Fridays, but today I want you to meet someone who keeps those athletes performing at their peak: our Chief Medical Advisor, Dr. Kevin Sprouse.
Kevin and I go way back almost 15 years, to our days with the Garmin cycling team (now EF Pro Cycling). Over the years, I've watched him become one of the most trusted names in sports medicine—not just in cycling, but across the PGA, MLB, NCAA, and Olympic sports through his practice at Podium Sports Medicine.
What I love about working with Kevin is that he's constantly experimenting and refining what works. Last week, he spent a full day at our office sharing his latest protocols, and I walked away with pages of notes. Here are three game-changers he's using with his athletes right now:
The Morning Reset First thing: 12oz water with lemon juice and sea salt. Simple, but Kevin swears by it for kickstarting hydration and electrolyte balance. I've been using our Totem Sport Sea Water packets for this—total game changer for my mornings.
Timing Your Pre-Workout Here's a cautionary tale: Kevin had an MLB player who kept struggling during workouts. Turns out, he was taking a pre workout meal 30 minutes before training, causing an insulin spike and crash right as he started lifting. Kevin's fix? Take it 60 minutes before, or pop a gel right as you begin.
Dialing in Sleep This is where Kevin really pushed us when we were developing Dream Shot. He insisted on the full 3g of glycine based on what he'd seen with World Tour riders. The difference in their sleep quality was remarkable—and now Dream Shot is our most popular launch this year.
Kevin's Go-To Products:
Mortal Hydration - Kevin was instrumental in creating both versions (regular and 2x sodium). His whole family drinks it, and he stocks it for all his athletes.
LMNT & Pillar - Everyday Kevin takes a packet of LMNT mixed with a scoop of Pillar Triple Magnesium. He personally finds keeping his magnesium levels high works well for him.
Thorne Basic Nutrients - A daily for Kevin keep nutrient levels at an optimal levels, also because it is NSF for Sport tested.
SwissRX Gut Defense - Kevin is a big fan of the whole formula of L-Glutamine, Aloe Vera, and Licorice Root to help soothe and resolve many of his athletes' gut issues.
The Feed Labs Creatine - A daily staple at 3g per day. Kevin recommends it to nearly all his patients as part of their daily routine.
SwissRX Total Recovery - Kevin's pick for its balanced carb-to-protein ratio (he likes that the carbs are lower than other recovery shakes) and anti-inflammatory properties that help his athletes recover after hard workouts.
What I appreciate most about Kevin is that he doesn't just theorize—he tests everything on himself and his athletes first. When he recommends something, it's because he's seen it work at the highest levels of sport.
I personally appreciate having one of the best minds in sports performance and medicine behind the recommendations and ideas I share with you.
Fuel your day like the Doc!
