Hey friend... I had a case of the Mondays and I'm late writing you! Yesterday was our 9th birthday.
I wanted to tell you a story. September 14, 2017 was my two-year sobriety anniversary. It was also the day we opened our very first physical Doughp location. a kiosk at a food hall in San Francisco. Before then, I'd been popping up at a food park and catering anywhere someone would let me scoop up some dough!
In the Facebook event leading up to the grand opening, I included something spontaneous: If you say "It's Doughp to be sober!" at checkout, you'll get 20% off in honor of my 2nd sober birthday.
I didn't know what would happen but what came next changed everything. One message was from a woman who said she was two weeks sober and wanted to know if I knew of any good meetings in the city. Another was from someone who had been sober for 13 years and had never told anyone, writing to say that seeing me be public made him feel less alone.
I sat there reading those messages and something clicked. Doughp had a platform. And I had a responsibility to use it.
Because recovery, and mental health, and the hard stuff we carry... it isn't a dark secret. It isn't something to hide or be ashamed. 1 in 10 Americans identify as being in recovery yet it can feel so isolating.
That's why Doughp4Hope exists. That's why we donate 1% of every sale to the She Recovers Foundation. That's why we talk about these things out loud.
Early on when we were raising capital, some of my friends asked me if I was planning to tell potential investors I was sober. Suggesting I probably should leave that out.
My response was, "I can't WAIT to tell them I'm sober. It's the coolest thing about me. It shows that something wasn't working in my life and I made a change."
A hard, painful, life-altering change. And I'd do it again every single day. That's not a liability. That's a superpower.
Over this past week, you showed me that what we built mattered:
"I started following when I was in the midst of my active addiction with alcohol. I saw how Doughp uplifted and empowered other people struggling with addiction, and today I'm coming up on 4 years of sobriety." — @realisticrajeev
"Just 7 years ago I found you for my husband's first sober birthday. Doughp holds a special place in my heart." — @themrsd823
And this one, remembering all our Mental Health Monday emails asking you to tell us how you're really doing: "Thank you for actually responding to me on my bad days." — Rebecca W.
We did it. Nine years. Thank you...
Have a Doughp (Birth)day! ❤
