"This week, the FTC took an unprecedented step and banned a data broker from selling people’s location data" in "a major move that could signal some more aggressive action from policy makers to curb the corrosive effects that data brokers have on personal privacy." Read more about the ban here.
- Your Medical Data Is Code Blue [wired.com]
Recently, nearly 10 million people were affected by an "unauthorized party" hack of Perry Johnson and Associates, a "company that provides 'transcription and diction' services to Northwell Health, a medical provider." The hack may have exposed information such as name, birth date, address, medical record numbers, and information about medical conditions and history. Steven Levy argues that "companies storing medical records must at the least adopt state-of-the-art protections."
- Meta Faces Another EU Privacy Challenge Over 'Pay for Privacy' Consent Choice [techcrunch.com]
Meta recently announced a subscription plan for EU citizens who want to use its products without being tracked or profiled. But has the plan brought them in line with European privacy regulations? Privacy rights advocacy group NOYB is "supporting a new complaint…that alleges the company is breaching EU law by framing a choice that makes it far harder for users to withdraw consent to its tracking ads than to agree."
